Winners Announced! Students Nationwide Earn Scholarships in 2026 Districts Make the Difference Video Contest

Districts Make the Difference proudly announces the winners of the 2026 Districts Make the Difference national student video scholarship contest, recognizing outstanding high school students who creatively highlighted the essential role special districts play in communities across the country.

Students from across the United States were challenged to produce an original 60-second video showcasing how special districts provide critical local services that millions rely on every day — including water, fire protection, parks and recreation, healthcare, transportation, sanitation, and more.

A panel of judges selected the top finalists based on creativity, accuracy, storytelling, and production quality. Final scholarship recipients were then determined through public voting.

2026 Scholarship Winners

  • Caleigh M. from Vacaville High School in California will receive a $2,000 first-place scholarship for a video detailing how special districts process wastewater.
  • Emma A. from Ridge Point High School in Texas will receive a $1,000 second-place scholarship for a video about multiple types of special districts and what life would be like without them.
  • Zach S. from South Elgin High School in Illinois will receive a $500 third-place scholarship for a video highlighting the South Elgin & Countryside Fire Protection District.

In recognition of the educators who encourage student achievement and civic engagement, each winning student’s designated teacher will also receive a $500 award.

The scholarship program is sponsored by the National Special Districts Association, the only national organization dedicated exclusively to representing and advocating for special districts nationwide.

“This contest gives students an opportunity to explore how local services shape the quality of life in their communities while using creativity and storytelling to educate others,” said Ann Terry, president of the National Special Districts Association. “We are continually inspired by the talent, insight, and innovation students bring to this program, and we congratulate all of this year’s participants and scholarship winners.”
