Special districts are local governments created by their communities to deliver a specific service — fire protection, water, parks, libraries, hospitals, and more — with direct local control.

Select a highlighted state on the map (or use the state list below) to see how many special districts serve that state, which types are most common, and to download the full printable profile.

State profiles are currently available for California, Colorado, Florida, Kentucky, Louisiana, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, South Carolina, Texas, Washington, Wyoming. More states are coming soon.

Figures are drawn from each state's NSDA Special Districts Profile — primarily the U.S. Census Bureau's 2022 Census of Governments, along with state association and state agency sources. Full citations appear in each state's downloadable PDF.
