Federal Advocacy at Work: Spotlight on the NSDA Federal Advocacy Committee

8.18.25 At the heart of the National Special Districts Association’s policy and legislative impact lies a dedicated group of public servants who ensure special districts are heard in the halls of Congress and throughout the federal policymaking process: the NSDA Federal Advocacy Committee.

Whether we’re charging forward on urgent policy matters or maintaining a strategic posture on emerging issues, the Committee—and the broader NSDA policy advisor network—remains the foundation of our national advocacy work. Through monthly virtual meetings, this group of committed representatives provides direct engagement, real-time insights, and decision-making power for our members across the country. Members not only stay informed about developments in Washington, D.C., but also help shape NSDA’s policy positions and authorize advocacy action that directly supports the ability of special districts to serve their communities.

Recent successes underscore the Committee’s influence and collaboration. When OSHA proposed federal workplace heat safety rules, the Committee moved quickly—convening members, submitting formal testimony, and issuing a detailed letter to federal officials to ensure special district workers were protected and appropriately represented. Another win came through NSDA’s partnership with the Community Impact Coalition, where the Committee played a vital role in the successful defense of tax-exempt status for nonprofit associations like ours.

These are just two examples of the Committee’s strategic, results-driven approach.

The NSDA Federal Advocacy Committee is more than just a body of advisors—it’s a national leadership forum for special districts. To our current members: thank you. Your dedication strengthens the voice of local service providers across the country. For those intrigued by this work and passionate about policy, consider joining NSDA and becoming a part of the advocacy movement.

And looking ahead – The Federal Advocacy Committee will begin shaping the 2026 Advocacy Agenda this fall, so stay tuned.
